Merl Krull - The date: Late summer/early fall of 2005, I believe. I was still working and driving approximately 40 miles each way Monday through Friday. I was thoroughly enjoying my work as Assistant Principal; I was very happy with my life. One Sunday at church, I was approached about being a candidate for the church council. My first reaction was “no”; my second reaction was a stronger “no”. In my mind, I had “been there, done that”; I had “served my time”. I had been on council several years prior – serving two years as Congregational President, I had been on a Long Range Planning Committee, the Building committee, I sing in the choir – and this went on ad nauseum.
But I did agree to consider it – and pray about it.
I would start out each morning driving to work – and the Spirit and I would, I dare say, argue about this request. My position was “no”, the Spirit kept telling me that I needed to do this; by the time I arrived at work, I’d go “ok, I’ll think about it”. We would go through this routine each day for several weeks until finally I agreed. I needed to serve the Lord. And I needed to do it “with zeal”.
This routine goes on frequently with me. It had gone on before – and it certainly has gone on many times since. And I’m thinking it goes on with you as well. We can think of all the reasons why we cannot do something, why this won’t work, why this is not for me. Certainly there are others who can do it – can do it better. The time is just not right. And this list goes on.
Think about this as you consider our current Capital Campaign. I firmly believe that if we do what pleases the Lord, He will reward this congregation in mysterious ways … ways that we cannot imagine.
Please ask the Holy Spirit to guide you in your response, keep your spiritual fervor, zealously supporting this mission request. Then by serving the Lord…. expect great things!!
